The Story

When the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly evolved from a local epidemic into a pandemic, the world was caught dead in its tracks. Movement was greatly restricted to prevent the spread of the virus, affecting governments, businesses, services, and communities. As life had to move on despite the crisis, humanity found ways to adopt to a "new normal." This product line repurposes images from the Ayala Museum collection to depict how lives changed during the height of COVID-19. Here we see a depiction of a local carter from Manila, transporting crates with the help of a carabao or water buffalo. This work is entitled Un Indio Carretonero painted after Damian Domingo, ca. 1820s – 1830s. During the COVID-19 pandemic, essential workers such as deliverymen played a crucial role in keeping services and goods available and the economy afloat. This is a nod to them.”
