The Story

Byzantine Time Traveler was born out of our passion for Byzantine or Eastern Roman history. Through a combination of digital content, art, and merchandise, we aim to make the exciting yet lesser-known and often misunderstood history of the Byzantine Empire known to a wider global audience. We started our storytelling journey in 2021 with social media posts, YouTube videos and special collaborations with other Byzantine history enthusiasts around the world. Since then, we have expanded into creating products meant to entertain as well as educate. By developing these we aim to present the colorful and complex history of the Byzantine Empire in a new light and in ways that can appeal to all.

54 unique hand illustrated designs. Medieval Byzantine (Eastern Roman) imperial figures, churchmen, military commanders, and other historical characters are depicted in these hand-drawn and hand-painted playing cards by Powee Celdran, the young Byzantine history enthusiast and content creator.

Traveling back in time to the thousand-plus year era that began in the 4th century AD, the artist attempts to view that same world through a medieval Byzantine artisan’s eye to capture the people and material culture of the world’s longest-lived empire.

Inspired by the iconic mosaics and frescoes he observed in the churches of Constantinople (Istanbul), Ravenna, Rome, and across the Balkans, and the coins and illuminations he studied in the great repositories of Eastern Roman art and history around the world, Powee applies the medieval era’s freehand manner of painting instead of using digital tools in the artistic process.

Reinterpreted in the artist’s unique perspective, the illustrations follow the Byzantine style which emphasized clarity over proportion and symbolic representation over realistic portraiture to achieve maximum impact when seen from a distance – such as in a church ceiling. But as the human eye moves closer to these seemingly expressionless faces and passive figures, brilliant touches of color and exquisite detail are revealed - just as they are in authentic medieval Byzantine works of art.
