The Story

"Over three decades of research, writing and teaching have proven that one of the ways to make history engaging is to go beyond textbooks and look at objects. Demonyo Tables is the lead essay in this compilation that shows how a Chinese lion mask used as an ornament in early Philippine furniture has been misread and mislabelled as a demonyo or devil. Each artifact, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has a story to tell if the historian is curious enough to interrogate the object. Trying to understand the context  of an object and its relevance to us is something I do for a living and in the pages of this book I want to show readers how I do my work by coaxing artifacts to share the history they keep." - Ambeth R. Ocampo
