The Story

Exemplifying the entangled histories of Asia, the Americas, and Europe, richly embroidered silk garments now known as the mantón de Manila or Manila shawl serve as a vivid symbol of global exchange over hundreds of years. Yet, despite its long history of circulation and exchange across continents, much of its story remains shrouded in mystery. The mantón continues to invite scholarly exploration, revealing the intricate entanglements of history and identity, reminding us of how the interlacing of cultural traditions enrich the very fabric of our shared heritage.
