The Story

This artwork is part of an album of watercolor paintings by Jose Honorato Lozano (1815-1885). Stylistically called tipos del pais, these images depict inhabitants, costumes, traditions of 19th-century Philippines and were produced as souvenirs for a foreign market.

During the Spanish colonial period, mestizos referred to all people of mixed ancestry, in contrast to indios who are native to the islands and filipinos who are Spanish born in the Philippines. In the artwork featured in this product, we see two mestizos in conversation, wearing typical modest attire made of fibers suitable for the tropical weather. Standing beside them are two Pampanga cranes.
